Wood rot
Wood rot is a fungus that produces enzymes that reduce the intrinsic timber strength by attacking the cell structure of the wood.
Decay starts at a moisture content above 20%. This moisture enters the construction through structural faults or poor maintenance.
Simply removing and replacing decayed material is not a complete solution, particularly if further deterioration of the structure is to be prevented and maintenance continued.
Once detected, both decay and moisture must be addressed.
Replacing all the woodwork is a high cost option without a guarantee of an aesthetic end-result.
