wood filling - a step by step guide
Step 1
It is important that the wood is not to damp, check it with a moisture analyser (not more than 20%).
Step 2
Cut the area to be repaired back to the healthy wood. For that use a router with a wood rot reamer or a chisel. For conservation joints use a groove reamer to open up the joints.
Step 3
Flexipox SD and Woodflex are epoxy products; with these products a primer is required (Woodfix sf). Mix the Woodfix sf in a mixing cup and use a disposable brush to give the area a thin layer. Wait at least a half an hour before starting to repair. When you wait longer than 3 days before starting, the process need to be repeated. The products are best to use with the temperature between 4°C and 22°C.
Step 4
After that you can decide what to do. If there is still enough healthy wood left you can use the Flexipox SD for small to large repairs. If the repair is too big you can also put a new piece of timber in the frame. For that use Flexipox SD or Woodflex. Woodflex is best to use for conservation joints, fine gaps, cracks,or gluing new pieces of timber in, and where wooden parts are required to be glued together.
Step 5
Mix the Flexipox SD or Woodflex on a mixing board till you get one colour. Than use application knife for filling or shaping. Remove big lumps of Flexipox after repairing from surface, when the repair is hard. Cut away edges with a sharp chisel. Then sand it till you get a smooth finish.
